150 Days of Carney: Liberals at 44% with 9 Point Lead Over Conservatives
August 13, 2025 (Toronto, ON) – A new Liaison Strategies poll for the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada finds Mark Carney's Liberals with a strong 9 point national lead over the Conservative Party while Carney himself enjoys a 64% approval rating.
Conducted from August 6-8, 2025, using interactive voice response technology, the poll surveyed 1,000 Canadians. The margin of error for the poll is +/- 3.09%, 19 times out of 20.
Liaison Strategies, a member of the Canadian Research Insights Council (CRIC), was the most accurate polling firm in the 2025 Ontario Provincial Election and the second most accurate firm of the 2025 Canadian Federal Election.

Mark Carney has been Prime Minister for just over 150 days and is holding a 9-point national lead over Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives. Based on the regional breakdown, the Liberals would be on track for a majority if the election were today. In Quebec, they’re ahead of the Bloc by 22 points, hold a 30-point advantage over the Conservatives in Atlantic Canada, and lead the Conservatives by 11 points in Ontario. In B.C., the race is tighter with a 5-point Liberal edge, as the NDP has rebounded to 17% support in the province.
The Prime Minister remains broadly popular, both in his personal approval and in perceptions of his leadership. Sixty-four percent of Canadians approve of the job Carney is doing, 68% see him as a strong leader, 64% say he’s decisive, 63% view him as honest, and 70% find him likeable. These are strong across the board. Sixty-one percent say he shares their values, and 64% believe he cares about “people like you.”
Carney’s weaker spots are in how Canadians rate his handling of specific issues. While he scores well on most, energy policy is essentially split (47% approve, 46% disapprove), and he’s underwater on cost of living (54% disapprove) and crime (53% disapprove).
His strongest marks are on Canada–U.S. relations (56% approve), the environment (54%), and the economy (52%). Across the board, his personal approval remains higher than his ratings on any single issue.
Canadians are likely giving Carney some leeway. He’s still relatively new, and his first 150 days have included a federal election, a trade war with the U.S., high youth unemployment, international turmoil, and now, as of yesterday, new tariffs from China. It’s been a slow summer, but the pace will pick up once Parliament returns in the fall and Canadians get their first look at the Prime Minister’s budget.
Once that happens Canadians may change their impressions for the worse - or the better.
