Markham: Scarpitti the Most Popular Big City Mayor
October 27, 2025 (Toronto, ON) – A new Liaison Strategies poll for the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) finds mayor Frank Scarpitti with a 71% approval rating - meaning his net approval is the highest of ten mayors tested in Ontario.
Conducted from October 22-23, 2025, using interactive voice response technology, the poll surveyed 800 Markham voters. The margin of error for the poll is +/- 3.46%, 19 times out of 20.
Liaison Strategies is one of the most accurate polling firms in Canada. It ranked #1 in accuracy in the 2025 Ontario election and #2 nationally in the 2025 federal election. Liaison is a member of the Canadian Research Insights Council (CRIC).

David Valentin, Principal at Liaison Strategies, said the following:
If an election were held today it would be smooth sailing for Markham mayor Frank Scarpitti. Matched against his 2022 opponent, Don Hamilton, Scarpetti would earn 68% of the vote compared to 29% for Hamilton. Next year's municipal elections are now less than one year away.

Alongside a strong mayoral matchup result, Scarpitti also logs a 71% approval rating, with only 19% of Markham residents saying they disapprove of the job he is doing as mayor. This is the highest net approval among the ten big city mayors we tested in Ontario.

Markham residents are mostly concerned about the same things as the rest of the Greater Toronto Area. Crime is the number one issue at 29%, followed by affordable housing at 21%. Traffic is the top issue for 15% - only Vaughan residents ranked traffic higher (20%).

Meanwhile, the Conservatives are polling at 50% in Markham, a nine-point lead over the Liberals. This bodes well for the Conservatives holding onto Markham-Unionville and could endanger the Liberals in the two other Markham seats if it continues. It's important to note this survey tested generic party support and not local candidates names.
